158: Silence is Deafening

My world is never silent
Noise rattles inside my head
The clock is ticking loudly
Drowning out the thoughts I dread.

Cars part the air along the highway
In a rush, not too far distant
My thoughts follow the sound
I gain relief for an instant.

Sometimes you just want sleep
To anaesthetise your brain
To turn off the volume switch
Before you go insane.

But sleep won’t come, when you call it
Nor silence in your head
You cannot drown your thoughts
You have to face the things you dread.
