Writing as Therapy

Creative writing has so much power to create change and has become so embedded in my own life that it surprises me when I meet people, that aren't using this wonderful tool. Great writing can bring people together and change societies, but the transformation I am referring to is much more intimate and doesn't require any great skill.

The 365 poems project was a huge success. It didn't matter whether I reached the goal of a poem a day for a year. It didn't even matter whether anybody came and viewed the blog. Committing to the writing process was the important thing. Following that internal commitment, I took action and set up this simple, free website, which allowed me to publish my work, and share it on social media. The magic was in the space I created for self-expression.

Through my daily habit of writing, my subconscious mind came to know that it would be granted a regular opportunity to release emotion. This process of airing both positive and negative emotions produced both lighthearted and penetratingly raw pieces of work. As I reflect back on my poetry today I can clearly see the progress I have made and I am so glad that I had the courage to be vulnerable.
